FUNERAL SENTENCES FOR DAMAGED CELLS by Kaley Lane Eaton
Performed by Kin of the Moon and Emily Thorner

FUNERAL SENTENCES FOR DAMAGED CELLS traces stories of disease, reckoning, and trauma through generations of my American family through the poetry of my late mother, late grandfather, and myself. As it mirrors the Anglican funeral sentences, it becomes an elegy for the dead. - Kaley Lane Eaton

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Kaley Lane Eaton is a composer and performer currently based in Seattle, WA. Her work has been performed across the US and internationally, in venues ranging from Hong Kong concert halls, to the streets of Skid Row in Los Angeles. Eaton's “disconcertingly lovely” (Seattle Magazine) compositions are quickly gaining notoriety for combining innovative digital technology with ancient performance practices.

Eaton's work has garnered recent support from the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture (2019 CityArtist Award), the Allied Arts Foundation (2018 composer grant), the International Alliance for Women in Music (2017 Pauline Oliveros New Genre prize), the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences (2017 Distinguished Holland and Knight Fellowship), the Atlantic Center for the Arts (2017 Associate Artist), and 4Culture (2017 Tech-Specific Grant). Recent commissions include the Seattle Symphony Orchestra (BIG DATA for clarinet, string quartet, electronics, and live variable acoustics), The Fresh Squeezed Opera Company (PSYCHOGRAPHICS), the Seattle Modern Orchestra, and pianist Jesse Myers.

Kin of the Moon is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation founded by a trio of performers/improvisers/composers (Heather Bentley, Kaley Lane Eaton, Leanna Keith) who have created a resonant space where their individual musical inspirations are amplified by the vast possibilities that collaboration fosters. They transgress the concert experience.

KOTM extends the spirit of collaboration to artists within the Seattle community, along the West Coast corridor, and through technology, to like-minded artists around the globe. Acknowledging that ideas are nurtured by community, KOTM seeks out artists and organizations to partner with in service to the concept of promoting ever-expanding programs fueled by circles of involvement and manifesting unique local identity.

KOTM believes that the pursuit of higher vibrational states, whether through Music, movement, artistic creation, scholarship, or any kind of curiosity, is the destiny of humanity, and is the birthright of every person on this beautiful planet.

---

International "ultra-soprano" (Second Inversion, WA, USA) and "new music rising star," (The Stranger, WA, USA) is known for her unusual command of stratospheric high notes and fearless virtuosity. By pushing the limits of vocally possibility, Emily Thorner bends, reshapes, and alters the perception of the voice as an instrument.

Collaborations and engagements include Guerilla Opera on Navona Records, BostonMusica Viva, Bang on a Can (USA), Acht Brücken Festival (Germany), Britten-Pears Young Artist Festival (UK) as the first soprano chosen in 20 years for their new music program, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Chorwerk Ruhr with the Duisberg Philharmonic for the The Ruhrtriennale Festival (Germany), a solo and orchestra performance in the Aldeburgh Festival (UK), and Soprano Soloist in Hotel Paradiso (Italy) conducted by Clement Power. An advocate for promoting the works of living composers, she is frequently sought after for world premieres.
